About MESTN
We are dedicated to creating a vibrant, interconnected system of trails that showcase the natural beauty, cultural heritage, and diverse communities of the Eastern Shore.
A Trail of Possibilities:
Our Story
The Maryland Eastern Shore Trail Network (MESTN) was born from a regional vision to address the need for better trail access across the Eastern Shore. In 2021, advocates and stakeholders formed the first Eastern Shore subcommittee of the Maryland Bike and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, initiating discussions on trail development. This effort gained momentum in 2022 with a visioning workshop at Chesapeake Community College, which mapped a conceptual plan for a regional trail network.
Early support from the Department of Housing and Community Development, the Mid-Shore Regional Council, and the Rural Maryland Council was instrumental in securing recognition and funding for the initiative. The release of Maryland Department of Transportation’s interactive bike route mapping underscored the region’s lack of connected trails, highlighting the importance of expanding trail infrastructure.
Following additional workshops and planning efforts, MESTN partnered with the National Park Service’s Rivers, Trails & Conservation Assistance Program in 2023 for technical support in strategic planning. By 2024, MESTN had garnered widespread community and governmental support, marked by proclamations from seven counties and towns during Celebrate Trails Day. Today, the network continues its mission to build a safe, sustainable, and interconnected trail system across the Eastern Shore.
What We Do
We are actively pursuing the need for better access to multi-use trails throughout the Eastern Shore. Through a united effort, we strive to encourage outdoor lifestyles, create safer transportation, expand green spaces, attract visitors, and preserve the Eastern Shore’s rural agriculture character.
Our work is organized around four core activities that drive trail development across the Eastern Shore.
Convene
We bring community members, trail enthusiasts, local officials, and experts together to discuss and plan the development of the trail system.
Advocate
We champion the needs and interests of local communities, ensuring trail development reflects their voices and priorities.
Plan
We coordinate efforts across multiple jurisdictions and agencies, crucial for effectively building and maintaining the trail network.
Communicate
We create a cohesive and interconnected community and trail system that maximizes benefits for all involved.
