Board of Directors

Sue Simmons, Board Chair
A former long-distance cyclist and an avid walker, Sue retired from local government service after 37 years as the Director of Caroline County Recreation and Parks. “Trails within parks are valuable assets; connecting parks and people to other community destinations like libraries, schools, and main street shopping—now this is invaluable!” She’s a trained mediator, an artist, and a leader within the Rotary Club of Denton, Maryland.

Bob Zillig, Treasurer
A resident of Grasonville in Queen Anne’s County, Bob has served for 10+ years on the QAC Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee in association with Queen Anne’s County Parks & Recreation Department. Though retired from the business profession, his community contributions on the Advisory Committee have sharpened his interest in sustainable land use and environmental conservation. His lifelong love of the Eastern Shore began with childhood visits to his parents’ Grasonville cottage, where he and his brother ran a successful crabbing business supplying neighbors with blue crabs.

Heather Grant, Communications / Marketing
An avid cyclist, Heather serves as the Executive Director of Talbot Thrive, a nonprofit founded in 2021 to foster community momentum in support of safe places to enjoy the outdoors by biking, running, walking, or rolling. Heather’s career includes a variety of marketing leadership roles in Baltimore and Annapolis, along with current volunteer marketing support for the annual Waterfowl Festival. She resides in Easton.

Owen Bailey, Secretary
Serving as the Director of Land Use and Policy for the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy, Owen’s talent for collaboration has earned him a reputation for consistency and kindness as he crafts support and resources for municipal, county, and state-level projects and policies. He lives in Kent County, serves as an active member of the Chestertown Planning Commission, and oversees numerous development projects and land use policies. A native of the Shore and father of two, he’s deeply interested in pedestrian-safe communities built on a Strong Towns model.

Andrew Bernish, Web & GIS Coordinator
A certified GIS Planner (AICP, GISP) with the KFH Group, Andrew is embedded in the Secretary of Transportation’s office at the Maryland Department of Transportation, where he leads GIS projects and mapping initiatives statewide. His cartography has earned a Special Achievement in GIS award from Esri and recognition in the ArcGIS for Adobe Creative Cloud maps competition. A returned Peace Corps volunteer who served in South Africa, Andrew also teaches graduate planning and GIS courses at George Washington University and the University of Maryland. He lives in Easton with his wife, Molly, and their three children, and spends much of his free time biking, running, and kayaking across Talbot County’s trails and waterways.
